Suicide Facts

This topic will be a little touching but is something that's not talked about all the time. I myself struggled with suicide and still do but not as much as a did before. The following will be discussed: Warning Signs, Symptoms, and Risk Factors.

*TRIGGER WARNING*

Warning signs

This is something that should be taken seriously and not as a joke. If someone's behavior is acting different check in and see if they are okay. It's more likely that someone thinks that suicide is the last and only option. The following signs are:

  • Making direct/indirect statements. (E.X " I wish I were dead", "I can't do this anymore")

  • Diary entries that involve song lyrics, and poems that involve death.

  • Suicide threats.

  • Obsession with death

  • Distancing yourself from family and friends.

  • Having a negative mindset.

  • Feeling guilt, shame, or rejection

  • Losing interest in school and falling behind in school work.

  • Giving away your personal belongings

  • Changing your hygiene

Symptoms

  • Alcohol and drug abuse

  • Stomachaches, headaches, and feeling tired.

  • Indifference and boredom.

  • Violent actions, rebellious behavior, or running away.

  • Accepting gifts

  • Impulsive behavior

Risk Factors

  • Depression and other mental health disorders.

  • Abusing alcohol and other drugs.

  • Suicide attempt

  • Illness chronic pain

  • Legal problems

  • Childhood trauma

  • Violence victimization and/or perpetration

  • Hopelessness

Alcohol and other drugs are a form of depressants. They can intensify feelings of depression, lower inhibitions, and make self-destructive behavior more likely. People who are at risk for suicide usually have more than one risk factor. Risk factors for suicide include a stressful situation or event, as well as a family history of mental disorders.
